How To Get More Defined Curls with Natural Hair
Curly hair is just like straight
hair, only curly. Curly hair is defined as hair that is naturally wavy, kinky
or tightly coiled. When you start growing out your current hair, your hair
begins to change slowly and then after about six months, you'll notice that
your hair is changing.
Curly hair is a
hairstyle that definitely splits opinion. Most of the time, it gets a lot of
bad press for being hard to manage, but it’s actually a blessing in disguise.
If you are
looking for a new look, however, you can find a wide variety of fun and
interesting styles for kinky hair.
Taking Care Of Your Curly Hair
You should start taking care of your
new look by washing your hair with a mild shampoo. Next, apply conditioner to
help moisturize the hair. After conditioning, rinse out the conditioner and
repeat the process until the shampoo runs clear.
Then, use a nourishing and hydrating
deep conditioner once a week or two to
keep your hair healthy. To protect your hair from heat damage, avoid blow
drying and flat ironing while transitioning. Use a curling iron only sparingly.
If you must straighten, use a low heat setting to prevent breakage.
We found a snippet
by celebrity stylist and founder of Curlsmith, Denis Robinson where he talks
about how we can make the most of our natural waves and curls.
Firstly, if
you’re tempted to reach for the straighteners or bottle of relaxer to try and
get rid of your curls in favor of straight hair, we urge you not to. “Curly
hair is beautiful and versatile – embrace it!” says Denis. “With so many
products available on the market for enhancing curls and waves these days,
there’s so much you can do with your hair without having to reach for the heat
tools.”
And before you
start thinking that curly bobs and pixie cuts are off-limits when it comes to
styling your natural texture, think again. “If you have curly or wavy hair and
want something short or cropped then go for it.”
How to Air Dry Curly Hair
If you have
kinky hair, you may not be used to it being in its natural state. The problem
with this is that if you are not used to seeing your hair in its natural state,
you may not know how to care for it properly when it is not straightened.
Ok… we've all
heard it—air drying is the healthiest way to dry curly hair. And while we know
that's true, once you get out of the shower, it can seem like a daunting task.
But if you wait until your hair is just damp and give yourself a little time to
style your curly mane, it will be worth the wait.
Also, use a scalp growth balm to keep the natural hair nourished and
prevent damage or breakage. A good scalp balm will also keep help scalps that
are itchy and dry.
